We have firmly established that Cape Town is a world-class city. It wouldn’t be topping so many destination lists if it wasn’t. This brings about two very important points. Firstly, world-class city means world-class prices. Secondly, those of us who live here are insanely lucky!

But, Business Tech recently shared insights into South Africa’s holiday destinations, and it turns out the Western Cape is the most expensive vacation spot in the country. When you think about our incredible wine farms, world-famous attractions and internationally recognised eateries, this is not much of a surprise.

Robertson winelands

The data was pulled from accommodation portal, Accommodation Direct. It was drawn from 20 000 accommodation listings from over 2 000 areas in South Africa. Staying in the Western Cape costs around R7 365, KwaZulu Natal is the second most expensive at R5 076, followed by the North West at R2 768. Plett is the most expensive town to stay in (Cape Town came in third) and nine of the 10 most expensive suburbs to find accommodation in are based in the Western Cape.

So, if you were planning on vacationing in the Western Cape, and this puts you off, don’t panic. Accommodation Direct CEO, Rupert Bryant says the primary reason the province topped the list is due to length of stay. This means people are staying here for longer in comparison to other places, and who can blame them? There is a ridiculous number of cool things to do, see, taste and experience in Cape Town alone, nevermind the whole province.

Beaches

And to those of us who live here. The best things to do, such as hiking, sitting on the beach or taking in the magnificent views are all absolutely free!

Only expensive for residents, I lived there for 8years when the rand was approx. 1.50 to the pound but now it’s 22/23 so for tourists it’s brilliant

Just spend a week holiday there. Was not that bad but one restaurant charged R180 a steak. Luckily I only eat fish when in Cape Town and that was cheap!

There are loads of places where Capetonians can go to that aren’t that expensive and similarly there are many restaurants that serve excellent food that are very reasonably priced.

Yes I would agree with that , but thank goodness because of our Politicians our Rand is so weak that it is very cheap for International Tourists to come here .

Your steak would equate to £9.43 which is very cheap compared to UK where a decent steak would cost at least £15 so I suppose it depends where you are from

YES i AGREE …. SA seems to think that because of our weak Rand, the tourists have endless buckets of money to spend … and charge exorbidant prices. Quite a few sites quote prices for SA citizens only 🙁 🙁 🙁

As a tourist guide and operator in Cape Town I must agree with this. It’s ridiculous how the charges go up from year to year. #capepoint #boulders #tablemountain #kirstenboschbotanical #restaurants #fishnchips at #HoutBay …to mention but a few

People are being ripped-off in comparison to global standards. Food, Travel, Communications cost are just way to expensive. These costs hurts the ordinary citizen and most definitely hurts entrepreneurship – it’s wrong
