The City of Cape Town has proposed steep rates and tariffs increases in order to collect the required R10-billion it needs to provide services.
The increases will kick in on 1 July, pending the public participation process.
The whopping water and sanitation increase is due to the drought, which has caused lower consumption of water and therefore lower revenue for the City. The City also requires extra funding to foot the bill for projects such as aquifer drilling, desalination and water reclamation.
But this budget will not be implemented until the public participation process is complete – and that’s where you come in.
Cape Town residents have until 4.30pm on 4 May to lodge their complaints or comment on the increases. You can do it via the post, fax, email, deliver a note in person, fill out the online form, or even dictate your comments to a City official if you struggle to write.
So if you object to any of the increases, or all of them, now is the time to put your complaints in writing and make them count. Here are the details of how to submit your comments:
