Firefighters spent the entire night trying to douse a fire that started on Signal Hill and have successfully contained it. So far, only one injury has been reported – a man sleeping on the side of the hill was caught up in the blaze and sustained burns across 45% of his body.
Signal Hill Road is still closed to traffic.
“No property was damaged and no evacuations were undertaken. It does appear that a private security company may have encouraged some residents to evacuate but it was not on the request of the City and the evacuation was premature and not required,” Mayco Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith said.
A separate and unrelated fire that broke out in District Six has also been extinguished.
Volunteer Wildfire Services requested assistance with donations, if you are able to drop off energy bars, peanuts and raisins, chocolates, fruit, Energades and sandwiches at Newlands Forest, it will be greatly appreciated.
They can be contacted via email ([email protected]) or on +27 83 977 2924.
UPDATE #KloofNekFire #SignalHillFire – still not contained, but the wind is calmer. Crews rotating and hopefully the fresh legs will knock this one down. Signal Hill Road remains closed to traffic. #WeHaveGotYourBack #FireIsEveryonesFight pic.twitter.com/iuGOnIiFmk
