In a small silver lining, in what has already been a dark year, South Africa has officially breached 1-million COVID-19 recoveries.
Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize announced that our recoveries now stand at 1 019 123, representing a recovery rate of 81%.
The cumulative total of COVID-19 cases identified in South Africa is 1 259 748 with 13 105 new cases identified since the last report. There have been 34 334 deaths thus far.
Gauteng leads the way with the most infections, equalling 27.1% of the country’s total. In second place is KwaZulu-Natal with 20.6% and the Western Cape comes in a close third with 19.5% of the total infections.

South Africa is now 16th in the world for the most confirmed COVID-19 infections. The United States of America continues to take the top spot for the most infections, followed by India and Brazil. Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Turkey, Italy, Spain and Germany round out the top 10.
Globally, there have been 92 035 510 confirmed cases, 65 882 548 recoveries, and 1 970 602 COVID-19-related deaths.
