A South African mother has been reunited with her son after he was kidnapped 10 years ago.

It is alleged the biological mother was only 16 years old around the time her one-week-old baby was taken away from her in July 2011.

According to the South African, KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Kara said in a statement on Friday, April 16, the kidnapper pretended to assist the teenager in obtaining a birth certificate for her baby.

“Since the young mother did not have an ID, the accused convinced the guardian to allow her to take them into the Jozi CBD,” Kara said.

A 34-year-old woman was sentenced to an effective six years in prison for the kidnapping. The accused allegedly pleaded guilty and was sentenced in the Empangeni Regional Court in KZN after she pleaded guilty to the kidnapping.

The child has since been reunited with his mother.
