The country has officially reached the 85% mark for COVID-19 recoveries, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced.

Latest government figures show that South Africa has recorded a cumulative total of 615 701 confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa. Of this, 525 242 people have recovered.

Regrettably, there have been 194 more COVID-19 related deaths: 57 from KwaZulu-Natal, 61 from Gauteng, 4 from Northern Cape, 12 from Eastern Cape and 60 from Western Cape. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 13 502.

Mkhize has said that the country seems to be over the surge and coronavirus cases are experiencing a plateau. However, he warns that people must not become complacent with their behaviour as it could lead to a second wave of infections.
