Eskom’s power woes continue, and the cold weather has increased the demand, which translates to load shedding because the power utility cannot cope. Those supplied by Eskom can expect Stage 1 load shedding between 9am and 2pm on Thursday [July 16], and then a shift to Stage 2 from 10pm onwards.
“While we appreciate the cold weather, Eskom urges the public to assist by switching off heating appliances, geysers, and other appliances,” they said in a statement.

On Wednesday, Eskom’s teams managed to return one generation unit to service at the Tutuka Power Station. “This, however, was countered by a generation unit each at the Medupi and Kusile stations tripping, contributing to the constrained capacity,” the public enterprise said. “This adds to one delayed generation unit at Tutuka and one at Kendal. Eskom teams are working hard to return these generation units to service.”
Those who have their electricity supplied by the City of Cape Town can expect a load-shedding-free morning and early afternoon on Thursday. From 2pm, City customers will move to Stage 1 load shedding until 10pm.
Most City customers will not experience load-shedding this morning and early afternoon. From 14:00, City customers will move to Stage 1 until 22:00.
Eskom customers will be shed at Stage 1 from 09:00 and move to Stage 2 from 14:00.
