It appears South Africans are not quite out of the woods just yet when it comes to load shedding. Eskom has announced that there is a possibility that Stage 2 may strike at short notice on Thursday, September 10.
The embattled power utility explained in a statement that a conveyor belt feeding coal into the Medupi generation units failed late Wednesday night [September 9].
“This means the four generation units in service are not able to take in the requisite amount of coal to generate electricity. This puts further strain on Eskom’s ability to fully supply electricity over the next 24 hours,” they said.
“While Eskom teams are working round the clock to repair the conveyor belt, which is expected to take the better part of the day, any further breakdown elsewhere in the generation fleet would necessitate the implementation of Stage 2 load shedding at short notice.”
