A senior political office-bearer in the Democratic Alliance (DA) is one of the three suspects that were taken into custody on Monday, May 31, in connection with the 2019 murder of former Stellenbosch deputy mayor Cameron Mcako.

Mcako, a well-known tavern owner, succumbed to his injuries two days after he was shot outside his Kayamandi business on November 1.

Several people were also killed in Kayamandi in the same year when land grabs by fringe political figures made headlines. Land grab leader Midas Wanana was murdered in September in what was believed to have been a power struggle for the control of Kayamandi, Times Live reported.

The trio, who were between the ages of 46 and 56, were supposed to make their first court appearance in Stellenbosch on Wednesday, June 2 on charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

However, in response to a tweet by Good party’s Secretary-General, Brett Herron, the Stellenbosch municipal said that the suspect was yet to appear.

A News24 report quoted Western Cape police spokesperson Col Andrè Traut as saying that they were set to appear on Thursday, June 3.
