Students at the University of Stellenbosch’s Orthopaedic Surgery Division are doing their bit in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic by using 3D printing to create protective gear for those in the medical field.
Both staff and students are printing and then assembling visors that act as personal protective equipment (PPEs) for those on the frontline, fighting the virus.
Speaking to Radio 786, orthopaedic surgeon and lecturer in clinical anatomy at the university Dr Rudolph Venter said face shields were identified as an immediate need following consultation with Tygerberg Hospital management.
According to Venter, there are many medical communities across the world who already make use of 3D printers and laser cutters to produce much-needed PPEs for healthcare workers. He added that it was beautiful to see them freely sharing ideas and designs.
