A statement by the DHL Stormers said that the decision was made as part of the prescribed precautions advised by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases to limit the risk of further infection in the rugby community. The decision was decided on Friday, June 11, following the receipt of positive results from scheduled testing of the Emirates Lions squad. The DHL Stormers will be awarded four log points because of the cancellation.
South African Rugby CEO, Jurie Roux, said the Lions have followed all protocols and have taken all the appropriate steps. While the cancellation is unfortunate, their approach ensures that the risk of cancellation of their match against the British & Irish Lions in the Castle Lager Lions Series on July 3, is well-managed.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape has now entered the third wave of COVID-19 with sustained increases in infections over the past few weeks. The province currently has more than 6100 active cases, with over one thousand hospitalisations. The Cape Town International Convention Centre is also set to open in the next few weeks as one of three mass vaccination sites.
