Two lives were lost in two separate incidents in Hout Bay and Kommetjie on Tuesday. The first involved a surfer who collapsed and subsequently died on the rocks along the shoreline.
Dave Smith from NSRI Kommetjie said, at 11.15am on Tuesday [21 July] medical crew responded to reports of a male surfer who collapsed and was lying unconscious on the rocks. Cape Medical Response (CMR), False Bay Volunteer EMS and police were also alerted.
“On arrival on the scene a 52 year old local man was sadly found to be deceased. It appears that the man exited the water after surfing and he indicated to a bystander that he was feeling unwell before collapsing unconscious.
“Our NSRI Kommetjie crew who were on the scene assisted Police and the emergency services to recover the man from the rocks and the body of the man was taken into the care of Police and WC Government Health Forensic Pathology Services,” said Smith.
A short while later at 1.50pm NSRI Hout Bay medical crew responded to another distress call from Hout Bay harbour following reports of a man reportedly run over by a boat trailer.
Bruce Bodmer from NSRI Hout Bay said, a bystander was trying to resuscitate the man when emergency services arrived.
“On arrival on the scene a local adult male was found to have succumbed to his injuries and sadly he was declared deceased. The body of the man was taken into the care of Police and WC Government Health Forensic Pathology Services,” said Bodmer.
Police have opened inquest dockets into both incidents.
