It has come to light that the two suspects taken into custody for the murder and hijacking of local surfer, David Wolfromm, were out on bail for a separate hijacking incident they allegedly committed in Simon’s Town.
Police arrested the first suspect Wilson Wilschut (30) three days after the murder. He was allegedly found with a .38 special revolver in his possession. The second suspect, Mark Anthony Williams (33), was arrested in Philippi on Wednesday and appeared in the Simon’s Town Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (yesterday).
On May 8, Wolfromm had just finished surfing at Witsand when two men allegedly approached him. According to reports, the men shot the surfer then loaded him into the boot of his silver Nissan X-Trail.
They then drove off in his vehicle and a short while later offered two women who were walking on the road nearby a lift. One woman, who is currently a state witness, said she knew one of the men so they got into the car.
“When the witness got in the vehicle the back seat was folded down. There was something covered in a towel. When she asked what it was the accused told her not to worry,” the prosecution said during Wilschut’s appearance in court last week.
The state reported that Wilschut crashed into another vehicle and a chase ensued towards Soetwater, near Kommetjie. The two female witnesses shouted for the accused to let them out.
The driver of the other vehicle was right behind them and Wilschut allegedly threatened him with a firearm.
Wilschut asked Williams for a lighter and set the car on fire. The fire was later extinguished by emergency services and Wolfromm’s body was found in the car.
Both suspects have been charged with murder, kidnapping, malicious damage to property and defeating the ends of justice.
