After a four month investigation, police have apprehended a suspect in the brutal murder of high school teacher Helga Van Wyk. The 62-year-old was found stabbed to death in her home in Protea Street, Durbanville.
“Kindly be advised that this office can confirm that, according to police reports, Durbanville police arrested a 29-year-old man for the murder that took place four months ago at Protea Street in Durbanville,” Western Cape police spokesperson Mihlali Majikela said in a statement. “He is due to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court for murder and attempted murder.”
Van Wyk was a teacher at Monument Park High School in Kraaifontein.
She and her husband Johann were both home when assailants broke in. While defending his wife against the attackers, Johann was stabbed several times and Helga tragically died in the attack.
The murder occurred in June, and according to South African Police Services spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk at the time, Van Wyk and Johann’s son came to his parents’ home the following morning and discovered his mother’s body and his father in critical condition.
Johann’s injuries were so severe that he required surgery and he is currently being treated at Durbanville Mediclinic.
