Two unlicensed firearms and ammunition were recovered thanks to members of the police tactical combat task team. The team, which was deployed to Khayelitsha, managed to arrest 14 suspects on Friday night.
The spokesperson for the Western Cape police department, Capt FC Van Wyk, stated that the task team had been monitoring extortion reported in the area, where they had been doing patrols in Y block before spotting a group of men outside of a tavern in Khosa Street, as per TimesLive.
“The group immediately ran onto the tavern premises but was stopped by the SAPS members. Upon searching the individuals and the surroundings two unlicensed firearms and ammunition were found and confiscated,” said Van Wyk.
According to SowetanLive, the suspects were aged between 23 and 39 and were subsequently arrested and detained at Khayelitsha police station. They are being charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The suspects are allegedly due to appear in the Khayelitsha magistrate’s court on Monday.
