Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the death of a 46-year-old male after the victim was shot at close range at a petrol station in Kenilworth on Saturday evening.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut told TimesLIVE that the Cape Town K9 Unit responded to the incident.

“The suspects’ vehicle in which they fled, a gold Toyota Avanza, was followed by members of the public while they alerted police. K9 Unit members reacted to the broadcast of the incident and spotted the vehicle,” he said.

CCTV footage captured of the violent incident has been circulating on social media and shows a man sitting in the driver seat of his vehicle, a blue BMW, at a petrol station waiting to fill up his car when he is shot at point-blank range by three assailants.

Two of the shooters can be seen running towards the vehicle and opening fire at the victim. Discharging all their bullets, one of the assailants can be seen placing his pistol inside the vehicle and shooting the victim again.

Traut has confirmed that the suspects were arrested following a high-speed chase.

“The high-speed pursuit where shots were exchanged between police and the suspects ended in Jakes Gerwel Drive in Goodwood where the men, aged 20, 25, 29, and 35, were arrested.”

Reports on social media are stating that the victim was a “gangster” who survived an attack last year.

“The possibility that the incident is gang-related cannot be ruled out and the circumstances surrounding the matter are under police investigation,” said Traut.

No further details about the victim have been revealed or confirmed by police services.

Two unlicensed 9mm pistols were confiscated from the suspects and are believed to be the murder weapons. Further investigations have revealed that the getaway vehicle was a car hijacked in Kleinvlei.

Reports state that the suspects will face charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and possession of a hijacked vehicle.
