As the Cape prepares for a warm summer ahead, the cities Recreation and Parks Department announced that swimming pools around the province will open their doors to locals looking to cool down. Swimming pools at a number of facilities will open from Friday, 16 October 2020, but only with a 50% maximum capacity.
Those looking to visit a swimming pool once they reopen will be subject to a temperatures screen upon arrival. Any patron with a temperature over 38 degrees Celsius will not be permitted to enter the facility. Visitors will also be required to observe social distancing in and around the pool once they have gained access. Distancing floor and wall stickers will be placed around the facilities to help visitors abide social distancing regulations.
No showers or changing facilities will be available and patrons are required to sanitise their hands frequently.
According to the department, the following swimming pools from the following areas will be allowed to operate from October, 16 2020 until April, 21 2021:
- Atlantis,
- Trafalgar,
- Langa,
- Khayelitsha,
- Athlone,
- Bonteheuwel,
- Goodwood,
- Hanover Park,
- Manenberg,
- Ruyterwacht,
- Brown’s Farm,
- Eastridge,
- Lentegeur,
- Mnandi,
- Muizenberg,
- Westridge and Wynberg.
Swimming pools located in Sea Point, Strand, and Retreat swimming pools will open on October, 16 and remain open for the rest of the year.
Certain swimming pools are currently undergoing maintenance and will open at a later date, these include:
- Kensington and Delft from 1 November 2020
- Blue Downs indoor swimming pool will open on 1 November 2020 and remain open throughout the year
- Bellville, Parow North, Emthonjeni, Vulindlela and Bellville South from 1 December 2020
- Long Street from 14 December 2020 and will remain open throughout the year
- Elsies River from 15 December 2020
- Parow Valley from 1 January 2021
- Morningstar will open from 2 January 2021
- Ravensmead and Newlands from 1 February 2020.
The City’s Recreation and Parks Department will start to reopen municipal swimming pools from 16 October 2020, but to ensure adherence to the regulations under Alert Level 1, it will not be business as usual.

The department urges all those to plan on visiting swimming pools to take note of the regulations and work with staff at these facilities to ensure the safety of everyone.
