Taxi-related killings continue to rip through parts of the Western Cape as seven people were killed in a hail of bullets in two separate incidents over the weekend.
Three taxi operators were killed on Friday, June 11, when the unknown suspects fired shots at them at the Harare taxi rank in Khayelitsha. The incident comes after five people were shot and killed at a Ceres taxi rank on Tuesday, June 8.
Meanwhile, in a different part of Cape Town, four people were killed on Saturday when unknown gunmen opened fire at taxis parked on the corners of Duinefontein and the Downs Road in Manenberg. No arrests have been made yet in either case, EWN reports.
The shootings bring the total number of taxi-related murders in the province to 52 since the start of the year, with attempted murders and injuries standing at 19.
Ntomboxolo Makoba-Somdaka, the spokesperson for Transport and Public Works MEC, Daylin Mitchell, indicated that their department is in contact with the leadership of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) to seek an intervention to control the situation, IOL reports.
Meanwhile, Santaco Provincial chairperson, Gershon Geyer said the union is currently negotiating with other regions to bring an end to the current situation.
