The legal representative of the woman who allegedly gave birth to decuplets confirmed that her client has instructed her to apply for an urgent court interdict on Friday, June 18, to put pressure on the Gauteng Department of Social Development to release her.
As reported by IOL, Gosiame Sithole was kept at a police station for most of the day, before she was taken to Tembisa Hospital in Ekurhuleni for psychological evaluation.
According to Sithole’s lawyer, Refiloe Mokoena, her client was picked up from a relative’s place at Rabie Ridge, in Midrand and taken to the Chloorkop police station in connection with the missing person inquiry opened by the family of her partner, last Thursday.
Mokoena indicated that once at the police station, Sithole was denied access to any legal representation as police said they needed to hand her over to the Gauteng Department of Social Development, News 24 reports.
Mokoena added that Sithole was then transported to another facility where they conducted a psychiatric evaluation. Mokoena said she was told that Sithole is a patient of the social development department and that they have a constitutional obligation to hand her over to any hospital of their choice for psychiatric evaluation in terms of the Mental Health Act. However, Sithole denied this.
She said her client was not given a choice, and she was allegedly told that the part of the Act, which allowed this process to take place involuntarily, would be invoked. She was also no further access as Sithole was taken to a mental ward.
