Temporary road closures in and around the Green Point area will be in place for the annual brightly-coloured Cape Town Big Walk this Sunday, April 7 2019.
Attracting close to 20 000 participants, the walk takes place along Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard. In 2018, the event had a recorded 18 000 participants.
In an official statement, the City of Cape Town has ensured participants and residents that security and safety will be the chief priority during the event.
“The City of Cape Town is providing support services to the value of R280 000 through the deployment of enforcement and emergency service staff, solid-waste services and the provision of the Cape Town Stadium and Green Point Athletics Track facilities as venues for the event.”
The event includes a 10km, 8km and 5km route. It will kick off at 6.30am from Cape Town Stadium in Green Point and end at Hamilton’s Rugby Club in Green Point.
Temporary road closures will be in place until 11am on the day.
“Motorists are also advised to please obey the relevant road signage and to park only in legal, designated areas.”

– Vlei road, from Helen Suzman to Fritz Sonenberg, closed from 5am – 11am
– Fritz Sonenberg, from Vlei road to Granger Bay Boulevard, closed from 5am – 9am
Lane closures
– Left lane in Beach road, from Fritz Sonenberg to start of the Promenade, closed from 6am – 11am
– Left lane in Beach road, from St Johns road to Beach/Beach road, closed from 6am – 11am
– Left lane in Beach/Beach road, from Beach/Beach to Lighthouse, closed from 6am – 11am
– Beach road, from Queens road to St Johns road, closed from 6am – 11am
