Cape Town has experienced its third mass shooting incident this year after eight men were killed in the NY 79 area in Gugulethu. Five individuals were shot and killed on the spot and three others have succumbed to their injuries.
This mass shooting is like ‘Deja Vu’ after similar shootings happened in the Mfuleni and Khayelitsha areas.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape has condemned the incident indicating that assurance is needed along with ramped-up efforts to stabilise the situation and curb this form of crime in the area.
The DA’s spokesperson on Community Safety in the province, Reagen Allen called on individuals who have information regarding this incident to step forward, stating that on a previous occasion, the Department of Community Safety indicated that a challenge in the low conviction rate is the lack of information and that SAPS is reliant on leads from the public.
“There are rewards linked to reliable sources that can lead to arrests – we must help where we can to bring criminals to book,” Allen said.
Police Minister, General Bheki Cele along with Acting-Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Thembisile Patekile, visited the crime scene in Gugulethu on Thursday, June 24.
According to News24, Cele admitted that police can do better to prevent these Cape Flats mass shootings from occurring.
No arrests have been made yet and even though the police is following up on leads, Cele says, “We will leave the issue of what happened to the investigators.”
