The Western Cape province could expect more than 500 hospital admissions for Covid-19 patients by next week while private hospitals are under a great deal of strain.
According to IOL, officials are already putting measures in place that will ensure that hospitals are able to keep up with the high demand for healthcare.
Provincial hospitals are admitting 170 people per day, while 2 355 people have been hospitalised since Friday, July 9. Admissions in private hospitals have increased by a total of 20%.
Last Monday, June 28, Brackengate Hospital of Hope had 133 Covid-19 patients, Mitchells Plain Hospital had 47 while Sonstraal Hospital had 39, IOL adds.
George Hospital, district hospitals along the Garden Route, Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn and George are reportedly swamped with the admission of patients, while Gansbaai has faced an increase of 70 new cases.
According to Provincial head of health Dr Keith Cloete, “Private hospitals are taking strain and there is an increase in cases literally across the entire province. Clusters are the big drivers of the transmissions,” he said.
