A family from Atlantis has been torn apart after three family members died in a house fire during load shedding on Friday, June 4. Two women aged 66 and 20, as well as a 42-year-old man died when their house caught alight around 03:00 am.
As reported by News 24, the family’s neighbour Ruwaida Cooksen said her husband woke her up because he could hear someone screaming for help outside. According to Cooksen, when they rushed to where the fire took place she could only see the three bodies laying on the pavement.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said another 69-year-old man was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
This incident comes after several families were left displaced around Cape Town this past week. A man suffered burn wounds to his head when his house in Pelican Park was allegedly destroyed once the electricity was restored after load shedding on Thursday, June 3.
Meanwhile, a Bonteheuwel family also lost everything they owned in a devastating house fire on Thursday. Bonteheuwel ward councillor Angus McKenzie pleaded with communities to assist wherever they could to help the family rebuild.
