The COVID-19 pandemic has swept the world, and medical health workers have sacrificed both their time and lives in the battle to beat the virus. Two more healthcare workers have died from the virus this week.
Approximately 19 health workers have died as a result of being infected with the coronavirus in the province, including two new deaths this week. Two nurses from the Groote Schuur ICU ward died on Monday, June 21 at other healthcare facilities after being hospitalised with COVID-19.
This also brings the total number of healthcare workers who worked for Groote Schuur and have died due to COVID-19 up to three.
As reported by EWN, Sister Patricia Coetzee spent 34 years of her life working at Groote Schuur Hospital, while Sister Eva Isaacs spent 20 years working there.
The Heroes of Groote Schuur Facebook page say that both were well respected members of the nursing team, and that their hard work and commitment will always be remembered and missed by their colleagues.
The Western Cape recorded 65 additional deaths on Wednesday, June 24, bringing the province’s COVID-19 death toll to 1565.
“We send our condolences to their loved ones at this time,” said Premier Alan Winde.
The Cape currently has 14 837 active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 54 835 confirmed cases and 38 433 recoveries as of June 24.
