Two school children have lost their lives in separate stabbing incidents across the Western Cape in the past 24 hours. Both incidents occurred at high schools on Wednesday.
In the first incident, a grade eight learner at Stellenzicht Secondary School was stabbed on the school grounds during break time.
The second incident occurred at Sinako Secondary School in Khayelitsha, where a grade nine pupil was stabbed to death on premises of the school. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but died shortly thereafter.
Speaking to EWN, spokesperson for Western Cape Department of Education, Jessica Shelver, said that the department will be providing support services for students and teachers at both schools. “We are devastated by the loss of two young lives. Heartfelt condolences go to the family, friends and the school community,” she said.
She added that police are investigating both cases.
According to South African Police Services spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, police in Stellnbosch are currently investigating a case of murder. “Three juveniles were arrested and are being processed,” she said.
