Uber can become quite costly, but it’s a necessary service for many in the Mother City. Luckily, the e-hailing platform has acknowledged that there is a need for more affordable transport options, and have launched a cheaper alternative.

In October, Uber rolled out UberNam, a more affordable option to take you where you need to be. Trips on UberNam start from as low as R19.

The UberNam option will use vehicles that are more affordable to maintain than the vehicles used for UberX, Uber Black and other options. The same safety protocols will remain in place across different options.

UberNam is valid across Durban, as well as in certain areas of Johannesburg and Cape Town like Paarl/Wellington, the Peninsula and Strand. However, it cannot be used by travellers needing to go to and from any airports in Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg.

Simply open the Uber app and request UberNam to get affordable rides to and from the areas below.

Johannesburg (will not be valid for trips to and from any airports):

Cape Town Areas (will not be valid for trips to and from any airports):

Durban: UberNam is available in all areas of Durban that Uber is currently live.

While travellers will save some coin, drivers will also be compensated for the lower costs. Uber drivers will receive an extra R6 for each trip, and those who complete more UberNam trips in a week will receive larger payouts.
