A recent advert placed on Twitter by an internet café claiming to assist students applying to study at the University of South Africa (Unisa) with the online registration process has prompted the education establishment to warn prospective students against scams.

The internet café, Lorekom International, which is based in Durban was called out by Unisa for using the university’s logo without permission as well as charging students a fee for assisting them with the online registration process.

Unisa has confirmed that the advert is not endorsed by the university and that it strongly condemns the use of its logo without express permission.

Potential Unisa students are reminded to only carry out their online registration directly through Unisa’s website or through its service centers, which are spread across the country, as well as to be on guard against external organizations claiming to be offering a service on behalf of the university.

Lorekom International’s advert claimed to offer a service to pick students up from and bring them to the café where they would be assisted with their online registration. The internet café was reportedly charging an additional R60 for the service on top of the university’s registration costs.

Prospective students are also urged not to get into a vehicle with anybody they do not know who is offering a service that cannot be properly verified.

Unisa registrations for 2019 are open as of today and run till January 25 with year module and Master’s or doctoral degree registrations closing on March 29 besides some exceptions.
