Residents in the Rondebosch and Newlands area or those passing through along the N2 may have noticed thick smoke and the loud sounds of helicopters whizzing overhead on Saturday, January 25 as a veld fire has been reported in the area.
The fire is reportedly blazing opposite the old circus near Liesbiek Parkway and the City is aware of the blaze and tending to it as best they can.
Locals are concerned as smoke has engulfed surrounding areas with hospital bend and the N2 covered in clouds of smoke.
No information is yet available as to what started the fire but three helicopters are currently dousing the blaze with water to prevent it from spreading along the mountainside.
The City says the fire is located on the mountain area just above Phillip Kgosana on the incoming side before Roodebloem. Phillip Kgosana inbound has been closed at Hospital Bend but the outgoing lane is still open.

ALERT: Wildfire #HospitalBend A quick response to the fire but burning stacks will keep fire resources busy for a while. Keep clear of the area if possible. #WildfireReady #FireIsEveryonesFight @NCCWildfires @TableMountainNP @vwsfires @wo_fire pic.twitter.com/vQYzOxpc5x
