A car containing a mother and her two children plunged down the cliff at Voëlklip viewpoint in Herolds Bay on Thursday, January 21. The son (8) managed to escape the vehicle, and the mother’s body was recovered from the surf the following day but the toddler daughter (2) is still missing.

According to Anton Gerber (67) from Herolds Bay – a passerby who stopped to help the boy – the event was no accident.

Speaking to City Press, Gerber explains that he was on his way to a lookout point in Voëlklip with his grandchildren when he spotted the boy waving for help along the roadside. He was visibly shaken, bruised, bleeding and crying.

“He said his mother and his sister were in the sea, but I didn’t understand what he meant. I thought they might have been washed off the rocks by the waves. I told him to get in my car and show me where they were.”

After leading him to the lookout point where the car plunged off the cliff, the boy told Gerber his mother was driving very fast and had deliberately driven off the cliff, reports City Press.

According to ER24, the boy had escaped the car when it rolled and overturned.

This is the same place where Heidi Scheepers and her two children tragically plunged from the cliff in 2019.

Voëlklip is a notorious zone for fatal accidents, and the viewpoint has even been coined “the cliff of death”. Eight people died in the area from November 3, 2015, to April 29, 2016.
