Cape Town motorists are urged to be wary of a new technique thieves are using to gain access to vehicles.
Local Facebook group, Cape Flat Stories shared an incident that took place on 30 July outside the Westerford KwikSpar in Campground Road, Rondebosch.
The footage provided by LanRoe Security Update shows a motorist exiting a vehicle and locking his car. A suspect walks past the vehicle and slightly opens the back door as the driver walks away.
Because a door is open, the car’s central locking does not engage. The unsuspecting owner assumes the car is locked and walks away. The suspect returns to the car, pretending to be on his cellphone, to not alarm passers-by.
He then opens the back door, grabs a handbag and casually walks away.
The CCTV footage has been shared and viewed almost 30 000 times. The incident was unassuming and passers-by were unaware of a crime being committed in plain sight.

Crime statistics indicate that over 53000 cases of robbery occurred in 2017 in South Africa.
Cape Flat Stories urged locals to be wary of their surroundings when leaving their vehicles unattended. “Check your surroundings when locking and leaving your vehicles,” their post read.
