A police officer who filmed himself drinking and dancing, while carrying what appeared to be a gun was reportedly arrested over the weekend on charges of attempted murder.

According to News24, Mncedisi Shezi, 26, who is a constable based at the Kleinvlei police station, made his first court appearance on Monday following an array of criminal charges leveled against him.

He appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court.

He faced charges of attempted murder after shooting and injuring a woman in 2020, driving a state car without consent, and shoplifting.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said he will remain behind bars until his next court appearance on June 8, Times Live reported.

Shezi was one of the two police officers arrested at the weekend in what Western Cape police spokesperson Brig Novela Potelwa said was “part of targeted efforts to clean up the police service of corrupt elements”, the report said.

In 2017 Shezi was arrested in connection with the murder of a 17-year-old in Mfuleni on September 10 of that year. However, charges were dropped when witnesses withdrew their co-operation with the state, said the report.
