South Africa recorded 22 910 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 infections and 460 deaths, bringing the death toll to 63 499 in the past 24 hours. The total number of Covid-19 cases currently stands at 2 135 246, while more than four million vaccine doses have been administered in the country.

Acting Minister of Health Mmamoloko Kubayi states that the Gauteng province is still at the epicentre of the third wave, even though it seems to be reaching its peak. However, government has raised concerns about other provinces showing an increase in cases, which could follow the same pattern as Gauteng.
According to News24, the health department has called on Treasury to make additional funding available for the national vaccine rollout. The funds will be allocated towards hiring staff to administer vaccines over the weekends. Kubayi is hoping that this comes into effect in August.
