South Africa’s total number of COVID-19 related deaths have risen to 61 026 after 382 more people have succumbed to the deadly virus on Thursday, July 1.
A total of 21 584 new infections were also reported by the Department of Health, with Gauteng reporting over 12 800 new cases.

769 people were also admitted to hospitals around the country bringing the number of people hospitalised to 13 396.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape has reported 19 825 active COVID-19 infections, with a total number of 325 473 COVID-19 confirmed cases and 293 220 recoveries as of Thursday, July 1.

Western Cape’s COVID-19 statistics:
- Total number of COVID-19 cases to date 325 473
- Total recoveries 293 220
- Total deaths 12 428
- Total active cases (currently infected patients) 19 825
- Tests conducted 1 810 158
- Hospitalisations 1853, of which 479 are in high care or ICU
The province also reported 76 additional deaths since the last provincial COVID-19 update on Wednesday, June 30, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 12 428.
Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde calls on all citizens that are 50 years and older to register themselves for the vaccine. Winde and several members of the provincial legislature have all registered to be vaccinated in the latest phase of the vaccine roll-out.
