The renowned Long Street swimming pool has finally reopened after its closure of more than a year. The swimming pool, one of the few facilities around the city that operate all year long, locked its gates in 2020 due to damages to the building.
According to a statement by the City of Cape Town, repairs have been taking place after bad weather ripped off roof sheets last year. Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Zahid Badroodien indicated that the pool remained closed until now so that the new repairs could take place.”We spent more than R1,1 million on the work done so far as it required specialist knowledge and skills. We are also pleased that many of the activities can now resume with the observation of Covid-19 regulations,” said Badroodien.

This historic pool is well used by recreational and professional bathers, swimming clubs, and for various underwater hockey and water aerobics activities. Badroodien added, that the pool has a long, proud and colourful heritage as it was once known as the “slipper baths”. “Because residents from so many of the surrounding apartment complexes walked over to the facility in their slippers to have a shower, it is encouraging to know that it will once again be well used,” he added.
The pool will be open daily from 07:00 until 15:45 and only for women on Tuesdays from 10:00 until 14:00.
