The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) wants to reassure donors that it remains safe to donate blood. The organisation stated the safety of staff and blood donors remains their top priority. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, WCBS has remained vigilant to ensure the ongoing safety at each blood donation clinic and at their offices.

“Wearing a mask when in public and donating blood remains mandatory”, says Marike Gevers, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. During the month of August, WCBS will be giving each donor who successfully donates a unit of blood a limited-edition face mask.

“We are experiencing a critical shortage in blood, especially in O and B blood groups. Currently we have a 2-day blood stock level and urge all eligible donors to please donate blood”, added Gevers.

WCBS needs to collect 700 units of blood daily in order to supply the Western Cape with a safe, sustainable blood supply. Traditionally, the winter months are a difficult blood collection period due to the fact that many regular donors suffer from colds and flu and consequently are unable to donate, and the COVID-19 pandemic has also added to this pressure.

If you are between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh 50kg or more, are healthy on the day of donation, lead a safe sexual lifestyle and would like to save three lives in just 30 minutes, you should be able to donate.
