The total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the Western Cape has reached 11 637 after the province recorded seven additional deaths since Wednesday, Premier Alan Winde says.

“We send our condolences to their loved ones at this time,” Winde said.

Winde said this on Thursday, as he gave an update on coronavirus and vaccine status in the province.

He said the Western Cape had 1 996 active COVID-19 infections, with a total of 287 820 people having been infected with COVID-19 as of Thursday, May 6.

The province recorded 285 640 recoveries.

“A total of 65 666 vaccines received to date as part of the Sisonke trial have been administered by 5pm on 5 May 2021,” said Winde.

Total confirmed number of people ever infected with COVID-19 (which includes reinfections): 287 820

Total recoveries: 285 640

Vaccines administered: 65 666

Total deaths: 11637

Total active cases (currently infected patients): 1 996

Tests conducted 1 546 656

Hospitalisations 760, of which 158 are in high care or ICU
