As temperatures across the Western Cape continue to rise, local firefighters are still battling to extinguish the numerous fires plaguing the Western Cape. The harrowing fire in the Vermaaklikheid area on the Garden Route has been burning since last Sunday – effectively, this means that firefighters have been battling the blaze for five days.
“Other resources will be mopping up the northeast fire line. A bulldozer is being used to cut a fire break around some homes in Vermaaklikheid,” Working On Fire said.
Another fire has also broken out on the Garden Route in the town of Herold, and resulted in Montagu Pass being closed on Thursday afternoon.
Several organisations, including the George Fire Brigade, Cape Nature, Garden Route District Municipality and Working on Fires, have banded together to fight the fire.
Montagu Pass has been closed at this point and Outeniqua Pass remains open for motor vehicles. Weather conditions remain favourable for the fire crews with light winds predicted into tomorrow morning.
