A man A 37-year-old man is reportedly set to appear at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court after he allegedly lied that he had been robbed of R10 000.

According to IOL, the man will appear on Friday after he was arrested on Wednesday.

He claimed that he was robbed by three armed suspects in a VW Polo while riding his motorcycle in Comet Road in Surrey Estate.

“Eager to solve the case, the detectives followed up on all leads, which ultimately fingered the complainant as the offender. Confronted with the evidence, the suspect admitted that he was never robbed and that he fabricated the case,” the report quoted the police as saying.

Acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Thembisile Patekile, praised police for their investigation and warned people to think twice before lying, a News24 report said.

R560 000 and three cellular telephones

In 2019, a 39-year-old Western Cape man was arrested for perjury after lying about being robbed of over R500 000 by police officers.

“The complainant opened a case of armed robbery at Cape Town Central SAPS, and reported that he was robbed by police officers of an amount of R560 000 and three cellular telephones,” police said in a statement at the time, according to Times Live.

The man was interviewed and taken to the crime scene.

“After further investigation it was found that there is a CCTV camera mounted outside where the crime allegedly occurred and the footage was viewed and nothing could be seen of the incident that had been reported.
