Provincial Health Minister Dr Nomafrench Mbombo says Western Cape residents are looking forward to getting vaccinated, as the province continues with its drive to register the over 60s for COVID-19 vaccinations.

Mbombo said this when she visited Ruyterwacht, as part of the campaign.

“I was warmly welcomed; residents are looking forward to getting vaccinated because they believe this will allow them to have a bit of normalcy where they can spend time with their loved ones without the fear of being infected. It is important to have them registered in the EVDS so they can be vaccinated,” said Mbombo.

Premier Alan Winde on Monday said a total of 172 249 out of 720 000 residents over 60 had already completed their registration on the national government’s Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS). This, he said, was a total of 23.9%.

“We want to ensure that every person who wants to receive a COVID-19 vaccine is registered on the system as soon as possible, so that they can get their shot when it is their turn.

“To achieve this important objective, the Western Cape Government has been on a drive to assist those over 60 to register,” said Winde.

As of 13:00 on May 3, the Western Cape had 1 941 active COVID-19 infections, with a total of 284 289 people having been infected with COVID-19 and 270 595 recoveries.

“A total of 58 956 vaccines received to date as part of the Sisonke trial had been administered by 5pm on 2 May 2021,” said Winde.

He said the province recorded six additional deaths since Friday April 30, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 11 627.
