If you’ve walked in the streets of the CBD lately, you may have noticed big trucks, lighting equipment and lots of cables. That can only mean one thing: there’s filming happening in Cape Town.

The city has been a popular spot for local and international shoots – including television shows, films and adverts such as popular US TV show Homeland and pirate period drama Black Sails – for a number of years now and it doesn’t seem like it will be slowing down anytime soon. Not only is it a lot more cost effective for big budget productions to shoot in the Mother City as our currency is weaker than that of the US but Cape Town offers ample diversity in its range of locations and even film extras (all proudly Capetonian, of course). Lots of the shooting occurs at the Cape Town Film Studio, which can be seen from the N2 highway, but often film crews branch into the city and beyond.

So that brings us to the big question: what are they currently filming in the city? Well, we know that Outlander Season 3 and the final instalment of the Maze Runner is being filmed here. We also know that How to Get Away with Murder star Alfred Enoch was spotted landing in Cape Town a few days ago. Whether he’s here for business or pleasure is unclear, but glimpses of zombie make-up, huge police vehicles, some cheeky Instagram posts from cast members and a tip from an extra all point to it being the next instalment of The Maze Runner. The film, which is based on a series of books written by American author James Dashner, takes place in a dystopian world and since the last film, The Scorch Trials, featured zombies and the next book titled The Death Cure takes place in a city, we’re pretty sure we’ve hit this on the head.
