It’s World Water Day, and no other city is more grateful than Cape Town for this precious resource. The Mother City has been plagued with the worst drought in decades, but the locals have fought back and brought down the water consumption to a phenomenal 511-million litres a day. This is the closest Cape Town has come to the target of 450-million litres a day.
The City has also been declared a national disaster area due to the shortage of water. Since February 1, level 6B water restrictions have been implemented, limiting residents to 50 litres of water per person, per day.
The City of Cape Town recently said, water usage is increasingly recognised as a phenomenal achievement across the world and dam levels are declining at a lower weekly rate thanks to the commendable water usage.
Day Zero, the day the taps would be turned off, was pushed back indefinitely because of water saving by residents. This week dam levels dropped further to 22.7%, from last week’s 23.6%, with no rainfall forecast soon.
Water is the most precious among all natural resources, today the world celebrates and Cape Town stands with them to conserve and educate others about this dwindling resource.
This #WorldWaterDay, we’d like to thank you Cape Town. In the last 18 months, by changing our relationship with water, we’ve reduced our usage from 1.1 billion litres per day to under 540 million litres per day. Keep up the great work. #ThinkWaterCT https://t.co/HoO2PIBcMS pic.twitter.com/RllNjdYAvF
