The internationally acclaimed convention known as Comic Con, where fans of science fiction, comics and movies come together to celebrate the artistic creations they love, is finally coming to South Africa.
Probably one of the most popular Comic Con International conventions started in San Diego in 1970 and was the first of its kind in California.
What started as a one day mini convention grew in popularity and now spans over three days. The founders set out to have not only the comic books they loved but also other aspects of popular arts they enjoy including films and science fiction/fantasy literature receive more recognition and be celebrated for the awesome creative and unique forms of expression that they are.
Over the years Comic Con has become the focal point for world comic conventions and now nearly 50 years later the first ever Comic Con will be held in South Africa.
Comic Con Africa will feature a huge number of interesting and niche vendors of pop culture and entertainment elements in animation, toys, gadgets, clothing, anime, manga, collectible card games, video games, webcomics, and fantasy novels as well as an Artists’ Alley, where comic artists can sign autographs and sell or do free sketches.
A selection of special guests has also been handpicked for their involvement in comic or pop culture movies, including Anthony Mackie who played Falcon in Captain America, Travis Fimmel star of the Vikings series as well as the World of Warcraft movie and Kevin Sussman from The Big Bang Theory.
Along with famous movie stars, convention goers can also look forward to amazing creative guests, from comic book writers and illustrators to top international costume makers.
There will also be a gaming element as one of the partners of the event is VS Gaming, as well as ReedPOP – the world’s largest producer of pop culture events.
The Comic Con Africa event promises to be an excessively entertaining weekend running from 14 to 16 September at the Kayalami Convention Centre.
