Capetonian travel and action sports filmmaker Chris Rogers recently won a share of $1-million in the GoPro Million Dollar Challenge, and posted a video in which he explains how he made it happen.

The first-ever GoPro Million Dollar Challenge challenged the GoPro community to create the most “epic” highlight reel in existence and offered a $1-million prize to be shared equally among those who submitted the best reels.

The only rule was that the footage had to be shot on a HERO7 Black model and submitted raw by December 9, 2018.

GoPro had reportedly received more than 25 000 submissions by the entry closing date. A total of 66 reels from 56 content creators representing 25 countries were chosen as the winners.

All selected entries were amalgamated into a two-minute long reel which celebrated the use of the HERO7 Black across the globe.

“Previously, our product highlight videos were shot by our in-house media team – expert creators with the know-how to get the perfect shot,” says GoPro founder and CEO Nick Woodman. “Now that HERO7 Black makes it easy for anyone to capture professional-looking shots during their favorite activities, we decided to challenge our customers to shoot this year’s highlight video and pay them for it. We’re glad we did – they absolutely nailed it.”

“It amazing to watch how quickly creators rallied behind the challenge,” GoPro’s Head of Community, Devon DiPietro, says. “Once we planted a seed, the GoPro Community grew the Million Dollar Challenge into something more impactful and wonderful than we ever imagined.”
