There’s been a lot of debate around the health of our planet. Species are dying, and sea levels continue to rise. The need for environmental change is more important than ever. With Earth Day happening on April 22, this year offers an incredible opportunity to learn, reflect and get involved in this significant cause. Here’s why Earth Day is important and what you can do.

Educate yourself:

Did you know that Earth Day was originally a grassroots movement that started in the United States? The first march took place in 1970, with 20 million Americans taking to the streets to protest their growing concern regarding the environment. Along with getting to know the history of this significant day, there’s no better time to educate yourself on the environmental issues that we currently face today.

Do your part

On April 22, 1970, when 20 million Americans marched across the United States, the world stopped and took notice. Since then, Earth Day has been a permanent fixture on the calendar. This movement is a testament to what can be achieved when we come together and make our voices heard. While public demonstrations may not be on the cards this year due to the pandemic, there are various online events that you can get involved in. Earthday.org will be hosting a live virtual event that will include various discussion panels. There are also a few in-person events that are happening in Cape Town that you can check out.

Reflection:

While every day should be Earth Day, sometimes we need a reminder. April 22 is a way to reflect on the health of the planet and what we can do to change the environmental issues that we are currently facing.

Earth Day continues to influence national policies:

There’s so much that has been achieved in the last 51 years, including the influence of major national policies. Hopefully, this will continue in the future as the planet grapples with rising sea levels and vanishing species.

How you can get involved:

  • Eat a plant-based diet for the day: If you’re someone who loves a good braai, then this is the perfect challenge. There’s a lot of debate around the meat industry and its impact on the environment, with plant-based diets being a recommendation to help relieve some pressure on our planet. Try and consume a plant-based diet for the day.
  • Cut down on electricity: A great way to help our planet is to minimize electricity usage on Earth Day. Challenge yourself to use as little electricity as possible. It may help to bring your awareness to your daily actions and how they may be affecting your environmental footprint.
  • Grow your own veggies: If there’s anything we’ve learned from the pandemic, it’s that our food supply is limited. Growing your veggies is a great way to cut costs, become more self-sufficient and decrease pressure on supply chains.
