A campaign to officially change the name of the historical Zonnebloem neighbourhood back to District Six has been gaining support from an increasing number of Cape Town residents.
The campaign was started by the District Six Museum and its director, Bonita Bennet, told IOL many residents are backing it. “We received overwhelming support from Capetonians over the past few days and I am amazed because my initial thought was that people would say this is just another campaign, but they fully supported us,” she said.
According to Bennet, an online petition to rename Zonnebloem has already garnered more than 800 signatures, and was only created last week.
“This is mostly because this is something that affects everyone and is entwined with culture and identity,” she said.
According to City of Cape Town Media Manager Luthando Tyhalibongo, all proposals for official name changes to suburbs, streets and reserves must be supported by a motivation when presented to the City.
He added that no name change may take place without a public participation process and approval by a full council.
