How do you even start digesting the news from South Africa this week? We had a president when the week started on Monday, by Wednesday we didn’t anymore. Then we had a new president on Thursday and today we eagerly await what his plan for the country is.
The Hawks raided the notorious Gupta compound on Tuesday and on Thursday seven suspects, including two Gupta’s, appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on charges of fraud and corruption.
There were rumours of Atul Gupta trying to flee the country from Lanseria airport in Johannesburg and a pilot, now SA’s hero, refusing to fly the plane. The Hawks now have their claws out for Duduzane Zuma, Jacob Zuma’s son, as well as Ajay and Atul Gupta.
In the short space of three days, Jacob and his son Duduzane became popular Google Searches after both parties were embroiled in scandal.
Google Trends showed that the former South African President was searched more than 200 000 on Tuesday after he was recalled by the ruling party ANC.
Other Zuma trends included: ‘Jacob Zuma Latest News’ (20 000+).
Duduzane Zuma was searched 100 000+ on Wednesday after he went on the run from the Hawks, and is now considered a fugitive.
The ‘Rand to Dollar’ search noted more than 500 000 hits on Wednesday – the day Jacob Zuma officially announced his resignation from office.
South Africa’s new first lady Tshepo Motsepe became the most searched trend of Thursday with 50 000+ hits after her husband, Cyril Ramaphosa was sworn in as the President of South Africa.
Mmusi Maimane, Julius Malema and Trevor Manuel were also among the list of yesterday’s popular Google trends.
Various Valentine’s Day trends also made the cut on Tuesday and Wednesday with ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ being the most popular with over 100 000 searches. ‘Rain in Cape Town’ also became a popular search this week.
