President Jacob Zuma has refused to resign, leaving the ANC’s National Executive Committee with no option but to recall him.
On Sunday evening ANC president, Cyril Ramaphosa, said he would have a decision on the matter by Monday, but nothing was relayed to the millions of people waiting to hear Zuma’s fate. A 13-hour-long meeting in Irene, in Pretoria from Monday afternoon into the early hours of Tuesday morning ended in a stalemate.
According to news reports, the NEC has resolved to recall him, they have the right within the ANC constitution that gives them the powers to recall any public representative.
This morning, ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule drove to Zuma’s residence to give him an ultimatum to either resign from his position or face a recall by the party.
A media briefing will be held on the outcome of the NEC meeting at midday today.
According to sources, Zuma has demanded to stay on as president for three more months to attend upcoming events. However, the NEC were not happy with his conditions and rejected this offer.
