The Constitutional Court will hear former president Jacob Zuma’s bid to have his 15-month jail sentence rescinded on Monday, July 12.
This comes after he refused to testify before the state capture commission while disregarding the court’s instructions to do so.
In his court papers, Zuma described himself as a 79-year-old man who suffers from a medical condition that requires constant therapy and attention. His health formed part of the list of reasons for the apex court rescind the verdict, EWN reports.
Zuma also asked that the matter be assessed with a sense of “fairness and impartiality.”
His legal team will present his case which will be opposed by lawyers representing the State Capture Commission and the Helen Suzman Foundation.
Meanwhile, Zuma’s supporters staged violent protests across parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, demanding the former president’s release. They have not only torched buildings and vehicles, but have also blocked the entrance and exit roads while stoning motorists.
According to IOL, more than 20 trucks, including a carrier truck transporting cars were set alight on the N3 Mooi River near the toll plaza in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
On the other hand, supporters have also gone on social media to campaign for his release.
The former president has spent four days at the Estcourt prison in KwaZulu-Natal.
