5 of the best places to see the snow in the Western Cape

Capetonians are, by and large, fascinated by snow. Maybe it’s because we love the ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ factor of snow in the Western Cape or maybe it’s because our snow just adds to an already interesting combination of microclimates you’ll find around these parts.

Either way, travelling to see the Cape snow is an annual must for many city dwellers – a great excuse to round up the family or friends and hit the open road in search of white-capped peaks.

The Western Cape is primed for snow this weekend so now is as good a time as any to take a leisurely drive out the city.

Here are the most likely places to see the snow on Sunday.

Klondyke Cherry Farm

A real cherry farm on the other side of Ceres, Klondyke receives a serious dose of the powder most winters. Often it’s just a dusting at the top of the Matroosberg but at other times the snow lies thick on the farm. With the temperature to hover above zero degrees in the early hours of Sunday morning at Ceres, there is a strong possibility of snowfall.

Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve

During the winter months, the Matroosberg mountain range is often covered with snow. So much so, the private nature reserve has its own ski slope and ski hut. A variety of accommodation options are available on the farm to suit visitors with varying budgets. The Matroosberg range forms the highest point in the Western Cape – making it the most conducive for snow.

Guinevere Guest Farm

The snow doesn’t always fall down at Guinevere Farm, but it provides a great overnight stay to be within driving distance of it. Not to mention the spectacular views – just look at that scene!

Mont Rouge

This farm in picturesque Tulbagh is central to snowfall in the region and finds itself surrounded by snow-capped peaks in the winter months. On Sunday morning, the minimum temperature at Tulbagh is predicted to be an icy one degree!
