Nestled against the Helderberg between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, with spectacular views over False Bay, you’ll find Avontuur Estate. Since 1984, the estate has been owned by the Taberer family who upholds the farm’s commitment to the wine industry and passion for fast horses.
Stud farm
The Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm was established in the late 1980s by the late Tony Taberer. The emphasis at the stud farm has always been on quality and thus, Avontuur is fast establishing itself in the top league. Equestrian enthusiasts can check out all the technical details and learn how Avontuur breeds winners from top stallions.
Wine
Avontuur Estate started producing wine grapes over 140 years ago. They grow four white and seven red varietals with more on the way. Avontuur is an IPW accredited estate (Integrated Production of Wine), meaning that environmental sustainability is key in their farming techniques.
Avontuur produces two wine ranges; the Estate range and the limited Premiere range, which reflects the best of each year. They also produce a Methode Cap Classique Sparkling wine, non-MCC bubbly and an award-winning pot-stilled, hand-crafted brandy.
The Avontuur Estate range is available for purchase online whether you are based in SA, the UK, Europe, or the US.
Tasting room
Avontuur boasts a large, modern tasting room, perfect for hosting guests. You can choose between comfy outdoor seating overlooking the paddocks and Helderberg, or indoor seating in the designer tasting room.
Restaurant
Owners, Melanie Paltoglou and Zunia Boucher-Myers, stand firmly behind outstanding food and excellent service. They place emphasis on leisurely meals in the company of good friends. Melanie and Zunia source local and where possible, organic fare to offer regional favourites while supporting local producers in the community. The restaurant offers an à la Carte menu, Champagne breakfasts, and contemporary country cuisine.
The dining area has a warm and inviting atmosphere. In summer, the terrace with spectacular views of the paddocks, vines and Table Mountain is popular. In winter, a cosy fire and underfloor heating will keep guests toasty.
Next time you’re passing through the Helderberg, be sure to stop at Avontuur Estate for wine, gorgeous food and highly rated thoroughbred race horses.
